Following the demise of British Artists in Glass, Peter initiated the now thriving Contemporary Glass Society (CGS), becoming its first chairperson.

In 2003 Peter was awarded honorary life membership of CGS.

In December 2003 Peter Layton was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Bradford, in recognition of his major contribution in the Arts& Crafts.

The award represents a return to familiar territory for Peter, who was educated at Bellevue School in Bradford and at Bradford College of Art.
