Lot 29 Lagoon Stoneform from the Peter Layton Series

If you are looking for a statement piece that will literally ‘Stop Traffic’ look no further! To describe this ‘Lagoon’ Stoneform as vast is doing it an injustice. Lot 31 Sample piece from Peter Layton's collaboration with the Royal Academy

This large Stoneform is an experiment from the early days of Peter's patterns inspired by the work of David Hockney. This pattern in particular is a very early version of ‘Arrival of Spring’. The characteristic linear cane work is plain to be seen, but the quiet, almost watery background of aquamarine makes for a far more tranquil piece. A true rarity, not to be missed by any fan of Peter's Hockney ranges.

alt

Lot 35 Early Skyline Perfume Bottle from the Peter Layton Archive

This piece was an exercise in form, as well as pattern, which is a variation on our ‘Skyline’ series. The perfume bottle has almost figurative proportions, but it is the shear intensity of the pattern which grabs, and holds the eye.

Lot 36 Highlight from the Peter Layton Archive

This well proportioned Stoneform is a masterclass in creating depth through the application of colour, and pattern. Both the horizontal blue, and linear amber trailing have almost ‘dizzying’ movement to them. Each one applied to a different gather of glass, generating an incredible sense of perspective. Pictures do not do this piece justice!

Lot 37 Kali vase from the Peter Layton series

A relatively new addition to the London Glassblowing family, this pattern is called ‘Kali.’ The unmistakable mottled white linear trails are clearly an offshoot from Peter's successful ‘Glacier’ series. However, it is the truly sumptuous red liner that steals the show! A piece that doesn’t need to shout to be heard, or even raise its voice for that matter!

alt

Lot 38 Red Glacier Vase from the Peter Layton series

Like the previous lot, this vase is statement personified. The soft, undulating lines of this piece are reminiscent of fabric. The intense, almost harsh black and white foreground pattern is masterfully tamed by the addition of a luscious translucent red interior. A tremendous example of a Peter Layton flared form.

Lot 39 Sample Felled Trees Stoneform from the Peter Layton Hockney Series

Another artifact from the lengthy period of experimentation we embarked on whilst researching our Hockney inspired colour ways. alt

Lot 40 Highlight from the Peter Layton Archive

This wide dropper form is a textbook example of what happens when Peter directs his team to “just have fun!” The unrestrained pattern is a Rhapsody in Blue. A delightful transparent aquamarine liner acts as the perfect backdrop for the remarkable ribbons of pail sky blue which snake in and out throughout the piece. These playful pieces are becoming thin on the ground, so grab them whilst you can.

alt

Lot 41 Giraffe Stoneform from the Peter Layton Series

This pattern titled ‘Giraffe’ has become somewhat of a rarity here at London Glassblowing. Surprising really as its obvious complexity has made it quite popular amongst our collectors. The piece strikes up a glorious balance between rich shades of caramel, and beautiful tones of peacock green.

Lot 42 Giraffe sphere from the Peter Layton series

This small, but exquisitely formed spherical form is a true delight. The pattern is called ‘Giraffe’. A rich and complex amalgamation of ambers and peacock greens. Contrasting moods all wrapped up in one beautiful piece.

Lot 44 Pink Tahiti Stoneform from the Peter Layton Series

After the success in 2011 of Green Tahiti, Peter gave his Gauguin inspired series a feminine twist with these warm pinky tones; highly painterly, combined with soft teal and vivid emerald. Acting as the perfect canvas, this cased stoneform is the ultimate example of Peter's passion for Post Impressionism.

alt

Lot 45 Mirage Stoneform from the Peter Layton series

This attractive little stoneform exhibits a remarkably tight, and considered pattern from our ‘Mirage’ series. A pattern which (in Peter’s own words) was inspired by an excursion to Petra. Whether the pattern evokes images of ‘desert dunes’ or ‘plowed fields’ as a recent customer described, there is no denying that this is a first class example of a pattern which is becoming increasingly rare.

alt

Lot 46 Green Lagoon Dropper from the Peter Layton series

The word ‘Lagoon’ normally drums up images of murky shallows, and grey, bleak surroundings. Not so in this case. This beautiful small dropper form exhibits striking droplets of vivid red, over a complex pattern of cream and deep caramels which in turn lays over a backdrop of deep ocean green. Not murky, and not at all shallow. Proof that beauty is more than skin deep.

alt

Lot 47 Reef Stoneform from the Peter Layton series

This ‘Reef’ stoneform as a very significant, and heavy piece of glass. However, its impressive weight does not in anyway detract from its elegance. This piece has been beautifully blown, and encompasses a myriad of colours and tones, both subtle, and vivid. All in perfect balance. A real prize find, worthy of the most discerning collector.

Lot 48 Garrowby Flared Form from the Peter Layton series

This incredible flared form from our ‘Garrowby’ series is packed full of drama. A positive collision of vermilion and cobalt blue against a contrasting background of lilac and sunflower yellow. This piece emits light and colour day, or night, whilst the complex pattern tells a story which changes on each viewing. A masterful work of art.

alt

Lot 49 Paradiso Tall Stoneform from the Peter Layton series

Pink Paradiso is not a ‘blend into the background’ pattern. People who own it like their glass to exude personality, and nowhere is that personality more evident than in this remarkable stoneform. Confidant belts of yellow, and orange, with touches of vivid green, over an ocean of almost incandescent pink. But it is the shear height of this piece which sets it apart. In this instance, tall does not put you at the back of the crowd!

alt

Lot 50 Mirage Vase from the Peter Layton series

This enormous Mirage flat vase is an absolute ‘one off’! A shape we have not made for a number of years here at London Glassblowing. This piece is an artifact from our days at the Leather Market, and quite possibly represents one of the last, if not THE last flat vases we still own from that period. The pattern’s characteristic sand dunes are out in force, a precursor to later incarnations such as Paradiso. However, this was the original. This is where it all began, and as far as Mirage pieces go, you will be hard pressed to find a better example.

alt

Lot 51 Green Lagoon Dropper from the Peter Layton series

As mentioned in a previous description, Peter Layton’s ‘Lagoon’ is anything but the murky, muddy pond one usually associates with an area of shallow water. This large dropper form is more akin to an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’. The flashes of red against the almost fossilized background are reminiscent of raw gems yet to be mined. Whether you agree with the description or not, one thing is quite evident. This is certainly a gem of a piece!

alt

Lot 52 Ariel 'V' Form from the Peter Layton series

We often have customers visit our gallery who compare the pieces on display to planets. In which case this ‘Ariel’ V form would certainly fall into the category of a ‘Gas Giant!’ It is absolutely colossal! Certainly one of the biggest pieces in the auction, if not the entire gallery. If it is a statement you are looking for, this piece has it in spade fulls. When displayed in strong natural light, the striking transparent blue will luminesce, casting flashes of blue light throughout its surroundings. A tremendous piece, and worthwhile investment.

Lot 53 Ebbtide Bowl from the Peter Layton series

Every collection has its examples which are so rare, they are practically unique. The Penny Black, coins struck during Edward VIII’s reign, and of course Peter Layton’s ‘Ebbtide’ series. This short lived pattern proved to be too expensive and extravagant a colour way to produce, even for us! As a result, there are only a few examples left in circulation and this stunning large open bowl is certainly one of the finest examples of Ebbtide you are ever likely to see, let alone potentially own. Shhh! Advice to the collectors amongst you. Put a bid on this piece quickly before Peter spots it and snuffles it away for his own private collection!

alt

Lot 54 Lagoon Ovoid from the Peter Layton series

This gorgeous little ‘Lagoon’ flattened ovoid has a far more transparent pattern compared to others in the series, giving it an almost ‘planet like’ quality. The large continental expanses of opacity are broken up with large oceanic channels of transparent blue/green. Punctuated with volcanic hot spots of fiery red, this piece could almost be a primordial planet in the midst of forming. Or perhaps just a very beautiful piece of glass to fire the imagination!

alt

Lot 55 Garrowby Stoneform from the Peter Layton series

Our ‘Garrowby’ pattern was perhaps one of our greatest challenges to ‘get right’. The problem we found was that all the separate colours (of which there are many) ended up competing for supremacy. Please excuse the expression but ‘we had never invited so many divas to one party!’ However, here at London Glassblowing we are nothing if not consummate hosts. After numerous colourful tantrums (including one or two amongst the blowers…) we finally got all the colours to play together nicely. The end result I think you will agree is not only harmonious, but extraordinary!

Lot 56 Pink Paradiso One-off Stoneform from the Peter Layton series

Every good auction needs its star attractions, and this truly magnificent pink ‘Paradiso’ stoneform is certainly one of them. Not a piece for the hesitant collector, the shear scale, and vibrant colouring of this piece literally grabs you by the eyeballs! An absolutely first class example of a very tricky pattern to execute. On a scale almost unheard of.

Lot 57 Ariel Ovoid from the Peter Layton series

Do not be fooled by the humble stature of this ovoid. It embodies qualities to rival many of the more complicated pieces with much higher price tags. This ‘Ariel’ globe is as close to a perfect example of this pattern as you are ever likely to see. The foreground pattern is dynamic, without being overpowering. The deep blue background is beautifully rich, whilst still maintaining its transparency. And the shape is absolutely first rate, which is difficult to achieve in a pattern as willful as this one. If you have yet to acquire a piece of Ariel for your collection, this pieces is as good as it can possibly get!

Lot 58 Ebbtide Bowl from the Peter Layton series

I have spoken of the rarity of ‘Ebbtide’ in previous descriptions. This piece however, takes uniqueness to a whole new level. This large footed open bowl not only sports an exceptional example of the Ebbtide pattern, but it has also been applied as a reverse overlay (in layman’s terms a risky and complicated method of reversing the pattern so it appears in the inside of the piece, instead of the outside). If this piece were a plate of food, it would be prime fillet of unicorn in a phoenix tear jus! Okay, perhaps one analogy too far. However, if this stunning bowl is not the stuff of legend, then it aught to be!

Lot 59 Green Lagoon Thick Bowl from the Peter Layton series

A magnificent example of a shape made famous by our studio. The thick bowl is the last word in ‘extravagance!’ The ethos behind it is to confine the sumptuous pattern behind an enormous quantity of clear glass, thereby creating a magnification effect. There is enough glass in this bowl to make a piece three times the size. Purely an exercise in flamboyance, but worth every penny I am sure you will agree.

How a Silent Auction works:

A bid is made privately, via phone, email or in person from 1st March. Lots will be on view, in our gallery, from 7th-14th March.

Each work is given a gallery price, which is a guide retail price for your information. The reserve price is the lowest bid that you may place.

You may submit as many bids as you like. Once the bid has been submitted it is considered a contract between the bidder & London Glassblowing.

If your bid is the highest bid, you will be contacted on the 15th March for payment and collection details.
