Lot 35 Early Skyline Perfume Bottle from the Peter Layton Archive

Lot 37 Kali vase from the Peter Layton series
A relatively new addition to the London Glassblowing family, this pattern is called ‘Kali.’ The unmistakable mottled white linear trails are clearly an offshoot from Peter's successful ‘Glacier’ series. Lot 45 Mirage Stoneform from the Peter Layton series
This attractive little stoneform exhibits a remarkably tight, and considered pattern from our ‘Mirage’ series. A pattern which (in Peter’s own words) was inspired by an excursion to Petra. Whether the pattern evokes images of ‘desert dunes’ or ‘plowed fields’ as a recent customer described, there is no denying that this is a first class example of a pattern which is becoming increasingly rare.

Lot 46 Green Lagoon Dropper from the Peter Layton series
The word ‘Lagoon’ normally drums up images of murky shallows, and grey, bleak surroundings. Not so in this case. This beautiful small dropper form exhibits striking droplets of vivid red, over a complex pattern of cream and deep caramels which in turn lays over a backdrop of deep ocean green. Not murky, and not at all shallow. Proof that beauty is more than skin deep.

Lot 49 Paradiso Tall Stoneform from the Peter Layton series
Pink Paradiso is not a ‘blend into the background’ pattern. People who own it like their glass to exude personality, and nowhere is that personality more evident than in this remarkable stoneform. Confidant belts of yellow, and orange, with touches of vivid green, over an ocean of almost incandescent pink. But it is the shear height of this piece which sets it apart. In this instance, tall does not put you at the back of the crowd!

Lot 50 Mirage Vase from the Peter Layton series
This enormous Mirage flat vase is an absolute ‘one off’! A shape we have not made for a number of years here at London Glassblowing. This piece is an artifact from our days at the Leather Market, and quite possibly represents one of the last, if not THE last flat vases we still own from that period. The pattern’s characteristic sand dunes are out in force, a precursor to later incarnations such as Paradiso. However, this was the original. This is where it all began, and as far as Mirage pieces go, you will be hard pressed to find a better example.

Lot 51 Green Lagoon Dropper from the Peter Layton series
As mentioned in a previous description, Peter Layton’s ‘Lagoon’ is anything but the murky, muddy pond one usually associates with an area of shallow water. This large dropper form is more akin to an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’. The flashes of red against the almost fossilized background are reminiscent of raw gems yet to be mined. Whether you agree with the description or not, one thing is quite evident. This is certainly a gem of a piece!

Lot 52 Ariel 'V' Form from the Peter Layton series
We often have customers visit our gallery who compare the pieces on display to planets. In which case this ‘Ariel’ V form would certainly fall into the category of a ‘Gas Giant!’ It is absolutely colossal! Certainly one of the biggest pieces in the auction, if not the entire gallery. If it is a statement you are looking for, this piece has it in spade fulls. When displayed in strong natural light, the striking transparent blue will luminesce, casting flashes of blue light throughout its surroundings. A tremendous piece, and worthwhile investment.

Lot 53 Ebbtide Bowl from the Peter Layton series
Every collection has its examples which are so rare, they are practically unique. The Penny Black, coins struck during Edward VIII’s reign, and of course Peter Layton’s ‘Ebbtide’ series. This short lived pattern proved to be too expensive and extravagant a colour way to produce, even for us! As a result, there are only a few examples left in circulation and this stunning large open bowl is certainly one of the finest examples of Ebbtide you are ever likely to see, let alone potentially own. Shhh! Advice to the collectors amongst you. Put a bid on this piece quickly before Peter spots it and snuffles it away for his own private collection!

Lot 54 Lagoon Ovoid from the Peter Layton series
This gorgeous little ‘Lagoon’ flattened ovoid has a far more transparent pattern compared to others in the series, giving it an almost ‘planet like’ quality. The large continental expanses of opacity are broken up with large oceanic channels of transparent blue/green. Punctuated with volcanic hot spots of fiery red, this piece could almost be a primordial planet in the midst of forming. Or perhaps just a very beautiful piece of glass to fire the imagination!

Lot 55 Garrowby Stoneform from the Peter Layton series
Our ‘Garrowby’ pattern was perhaps one of our greatest challenges to ‘get right’. The problem we found was that all the separate colours (of which there are many) ended up competing for supremacy. Please excuse the expression but ‘we had never invited so many divas to one party!’ However, here at London Glassblowing we are nothing if not consummate hosts. After numerous colourful tantrums (including one or two amongst the blowers…) we finally got all the colours to play together nicely. The end result I think you will agree is not only harmonious, but extraordinary!

Lot 57 Ariel Ovoid from the Peter Layton series
Do not be fooled by the humble stature of this ovoid. It embodies qualities to rival many of the more complicated pieces with much higher price tags. This ‘Ariel’ globe is as close to a perfect example of this pattern as you are ever likely to see. The foreground pattern is dynamic, without being overpowering. The deep blue background is beautifully rich, whilst still maintaining its transparency. And the shape is absolutely first rate, which is difficult to achieve in a pattern as willful as this one. If you have yet to acquire a piece of Ariel for your collection, this pieces is as good as it can possibly get!

Lot 58 Ebbtide Bowl from the Peter Layton series
I have spoken of the rarity of ‘Ebbtide’ in previous descriptions. This piece however, takes uniqueness to a whole new level. This large footed open bowl not only sports an exceptional example of the Ebbtide pattern, but it has also been applied as a reverse overlay (in layman’s terms a risky and complicated method of reversing the pattern so it appears in the inside of the piece, instead of the outside). If this piece were a plate of food, it would be prime fillet of unicorn in a phoenix tear jus! Okay, perhaps one analogy too far. However, if this stunning bowl is not the stuff of legend, then it aught to be!

Lot 59 Green Lagoon Thick Bowl from the Peter Layton series
A magnificent example of a shape made famous by our studio. The thick bowl is the last word in ‘extravagance!’ The ethos behind it is to confine the sumptuous pattern behind an enormous quantity of clear glass, thereby creating a magnification effect. There is enough glass in this bowl to make a piece three times the size. Purely an exercise in flamboyance, but worth every penny I am sure you will agree.
Dimensions: H: 11.5cm x W: 20cm D: 20cm Gallery Price: £420
Reserve Price: £270
