Cathryn Shilling

After graduating with a BA (Hons) Graphic Design from Central School of Art and Design in London, I worked as a Graphic Designer until my family’s move to the USA in 2001 prompted me to pursue a new and exciting creative direction. I studied the art and craft of Stained Glass in Connecticut and then on my return to London in 2004 I began studying and working with Kiln formed glass as well as becoming a student of Blown glass at Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing Workshop. In 2009 my 'Memory Surfing' piece won the glass category in the 2009  V&A Inspired By… competition. In 2010 my 'Synergy Series I' was selected as a finalist for the Bullseye Glass E-merge Juried Kiln-glass Exhibition as well the Remarkable Glass Exhibition at the Contemporary Applied Arts Gallery and my 'Synergy Series II' was selected for The British Glass Biennale.

In my career as a graphic designer I learnt to solve different problems in a variety of ways and I have come to realise that this has formed the basis of my approach to working in glass. I have always found glass a fascinating and seductive material. Through my work I explore the fluidity of glass as a liquid and its sculptural quality as a solid as well as its transparency in the use of colour and light.  For me it is the perfect medium, giving me creative and technical freedom and enabling me to produce something tactile, tangible and enduring.
