Anthony Scala

‘My inspiration is drawn from the optical effects that glass and light induce upon one another, and in turn, how these shifting qualities can manipulate the perceived image of an object. These enable me to create objects in which the laws of light, shadow, and reflection combine, in ways only nature can dictate, and which allow us a tantalising, yet transitory, glimpse of refractive possibilities, forever beyond our grasp.’

Anthony joined the London Glassblowing team in 1999, and under the watchful eye of Peter Layton, soon began experimenting by combining glass with precise architecturally inspired techniques.

Originally trained as an architectural model maker, Anthony’s work shares a synergy with the aesthetics prevalent in present day architecture, his elegant pieces both impacting on and merging with their environment.

In 2005 at the age of 27, he won the prestigious Glass Sellers Award, making him the youngest ever recipient. Selected major exhibitions include the British Glass Biennale 2004, 2006, 2008, and Modern & Contemporary Glass at Bonhams 2009, and Remarkable Glass at Contemporary Applied Arts 2010.
