Visiting a recent Gauguin exhibition I saw paintings of enormous power, painted with great courage, in the face of an outraged audience at the time. I was surprised, as I had been at an earlier Van Gogh show, by the extensive use of pastel shades, glorious expanses of pale pinks, blues and greens in the later works. In this Tahiti series I am attempting to emulate the remarkable intensity and luminosity of Gauguin’s paintings.
