In 2012 Peter Layton was asked, by the National Gallery, to develop a series of work inspired by a painting by Turner. Initially he found himself attempting to closely reproduce, in glass, the ethereal effects of the Turner painting (actually a small corner section of the “Fighting Temeraire”) , before concluding that it had to be his personal interpretation of what he considered to be the essence of the original. Out with the ethereal, rather a painterly rendering in glass of sunset through the use of strong horizontal trailing composed of strong yellows, umbers, ochres, with a piercing blue as a counterpoint.
